The Historic Merchants & Planters BankBarraque & Main StreetPine Bluff Arkansas Built in 1892, this registered historical landmark once housed the Merchants & Planters Bank. It was the first state chartered bank in Arkansas. The bank's vault was the most advanced in its day with a time lock and dual combinations; there had to be two bank officers present in order to unlock the vault's door. The bank failed during the great depression and the building was later purchased at public auction from Jefferson County by E. W. Hood. It is now the office of Southern Development Corporation. and Hood & Company Real Estate and Insurance Established in 1956 by Jim Hood, Hood & Company is now owned by Ruthie Hood-Carey.
